When he heard this, he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why do these people keep demanding a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, I will not give this generation any such sign.”

He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.

One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority.”

Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away.

He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!

And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.

Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened!”

So he got back into the boat and left them, and he crossed to the other side of the lake.

Jesus said to them, “You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.
