The king was overcome with emotion. He went up to the room over the gateway and burst into tears. And as he went, he cried, “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son.”

To the Israelites at the foot of the mountain, the glory of the Lord appeared at the summit like a consuming fire.

“Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the family of David and on the people of Jerusalem. They will look on me whom they have pierced and mourn for him as for an only son. They will grieve bitterly for him as for a firstborn son who has died.

‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t mourn.’

A large crowd trailed behind, including many grief-stricken women.

And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrow.

When they arrived at the house, Jesus wouldn’t let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, James, and the little girl’s father and mother.

But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had died.

But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.”
