Blow them away like chaff in the wind— a wind sent by the angel of the Lord.

“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.

“I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again.

I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.”

“O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen and act! For your own sake, do not delay, O my God, for your people and your city bear your name.”

But the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.

Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any native-born Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be put to death.

Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!

Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Blasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy.

But some of the teachers of religious law said to themselves, “That’s blasphemy! Does he think he’s God?”

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.

One day while Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of religious law were sitting nearby. (It seemed that these men showed up from every village in all Galilee and Judea, as well as from Jerusalem.) And the Lord’s healing power was strongly with Jesus.

Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?

The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”

They replied, “We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.”

Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself.
