You were sorry and humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this city and its people. You humbled yourself and tore your clothing in despair and wept before me in repentance. And I have indeed heard you, says the Lord.

to hear the groans of the prisoners, to release those condemned to die.

He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.

The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

You love justice and hate evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.

The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

Then everyone who has eyes will be able to see the truth, and everyone who has ears will be able to hear it.

And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf.

You will open the eyes of the blind. You will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons.

I will raise up Cyrus to fulfill my righteous purpose, and I will guide his actions. He will restore my city and free my captive people— without seeking a reward! I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”

I will say to the prisoners, ‘Come out in freedom,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Come into the light.’ They will be my sheep, grazing in green pastures and on hills that were previously bare.

The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will.

The high and lofty one who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: “I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts.

“And this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I have given you. They will be on your lips and on the lips of your children and your children’s children forever. I, the Lord, have spoken!

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.

My hands have made both heaven and earth; they and everything in them are mine. I, the Lord, have spoken! “I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word.

He said to him, “Walk through the streets of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of all who weep and sigh because of the detestable sins being committed in their city.”

“A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

Those who are left will be the lowly and humble, for it is they who trust in the name of the Lord.

That was the end of my covenant with them. The suffering flock was watching me, and they knew that the Lord was speaking through my actions.

“But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.

the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”

“Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen. He is my Beloved, who pleases me. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. Finally he will cause justice to be victorious.

the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.”

“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:

Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, “God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.

Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”

Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).

I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.

For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit.

And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.’

“In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.

For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son,

Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him?

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
