Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.

“I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

And he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God.

You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins.

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,

This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.

So John’s disciples came to him and said, “Rabbi, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you identified as the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going to him instead of coming to us.”

Before he came, John the Baptist preached that all the people of Israel needed to repent of their sins and turn to God and be baptized.

Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”

What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.’
