Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness.

Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting, “Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God!

The Lord first gave messages to Jeremiah during the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah.

The Lord gave me another message. He said,

(The Lord gave this message to Ezekiel son of Buzi, a priest, beside the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians, and he felt the hand of the Lord take hold of him.)

The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai:

The Lord gave this message to Micah of Moresheth during the years when Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah. The visions he saw concerned both Samaria and Jerusalem.

The Lord gave this message to Zephaniah when Josiah son of Amon was king of Judah. Zephaniah was the son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah.

As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?

At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest,

just as the prophet Isaiah had written: “Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way.

John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.

John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the Lord’s coming!’”

Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.

Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest.
