He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to answer.

I am silent before you; I won’t say a word, for my punishment is from you.

He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.

But when the leading priests and the elders made their accusations against him, Jesus remained silent.

But Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governor’s surprise.

“Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.

But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.

Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.

Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their accusations.

He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer.

The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter. And as a lamb is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.

He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.
