Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people,

“Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”

The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”

But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him.

Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.

“What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime.

Pilate went outside again and said to the people, “I am going to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find him not guilty.”

There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee.

But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah?

“Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him?

The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about. Instead, they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the prophets’ words that are read every Sabbath.

“Friends, I realize that what you and your leaders did to Jesus was done in ignorance.

The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people,
