Those who desert him will perish, for you destroy those who abandon you.

A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things.

Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich.

The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.

A person who strays from home is like a bird that strays from its nest.

Young people who obey the law are wise; those with wild friends bring shame to their parents.

The man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but if he hangs around with prostitutes, his wealth is wasted.

For a prostitute will bring you to poverty, but sleeping with another man’s wife will cost you your life.

Oh, what a sinful nation they are— loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil people, corrupt children who have rejected the Lord. They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.

But instead, you dance and play; you slaughter cattle and kill sheep. You feast on meat and drink wine. You say, “Let’s feast and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

Forget all this gloom. Get off your narrow path. Stop telling us about your ‘Holy One of Israel.’”

“Come,” they say, “let’s get some wine and have a party. Let’s all get drunk. Then tomorrow we’ll do it again and have an even bigger party!”

“For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me— the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!

“O my people, listen to the words of the Lord! Have I been like a desert to Israel? Have I been to them a land of darkness? Why then do my people say, ‘At last we are free from God! We don’t need him anymore!’

This is what the Lord says: “What did your ancestors find wrong with me that led them to stray so far from me? They worshiped worthless idols, only to become worthless themselves.

“O my people, what have I done to you? What have I done to make you tired of me? Answer me!

The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.

About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve.

Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!’

Jesus told this story to his disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a manager handling his affairs. One day a report came that the manager was wasting his employer’s money.

Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury.

But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near.

Their destruction is their reward for the harm they have done. They love to indulge in evil pleasures in broad daylight. They are a disgrace and a stain among you. They delight in deception even as they eat with you in your fellowship meals.
