and boasted to them about his great wealth and his many children. He bragged about the honors the king had given him and how he had been promoted over all the other nobles and officials.

For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off and takes away their life?

We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.

Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind.

In an instant they are destroyed, completely swept away by terrors.

But before they satisfied their craving, while the meat was yet in their mouths,

Tainted wealth has no lasting value, but right living can save your life.

Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death.

Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor.

Don’t brag about tomorrow, since you don’t know what the day will bring.

Income from charging high interest rates will end up in the pocket of someone who is kind to the poor.

“Come,” they say, “let’s get some wine and have a party. Let’s all get drunk. Then tomorrow we’ll do it again and have an even bigger party!”

Like a partridge that hatches eggs she has not laid, so are those who get their wealth by unjust means. At midlife they will lose their riches; in the end, they will become poor old fools.

And you brag about your conquest of Lo-debar. You boast, “Didn’t we take Karnaim by our own strength?”

His enemies, tangled like thornbushes and staggering like drunks, will be burned up like dry stubble in a field.

Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside?

When people are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.

After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.

How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.
