He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly.”

Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, “As surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!”

“I have made no trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “You and your family are the troublemakers, for you have refused to obey the commands of the Lord and have worshiped the images of Baal instead.

“So, my enemy, you have found me!” Ahab exclaimed to Elijah. “Yes,” Elijah answered, “I have come because you have sold yourself to what is evil in the Lord’s sight.

And Elijah said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: Why did you send messengers to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether you will recover? Is there no God in Israel to answer your question? Therefore, because you have done this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on; you will surely die.”

“O Lord, the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes.

And Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced because of what God had done for the people, for everything had been accomplished so quickly.

Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them.

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom. Praise him forever!

Then they will not be like their ancestors— stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God.

Then the wayward will gain understanding, and complainers will accept instruction.

“Therefore, I will bring upon you all the disasters I have announced. Prepare to meet your God in judgment, you people of Israel!”

And if you are willing to accept what I say, he is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come.

John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.”

The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’”

John’s clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.

And he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God.

“And you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord.

They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.”

You yourselves know how plainly I told you, ‘I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for him.’

So I sent for you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here, waiting before God to hear the message the Lord has given you.”

He does this to make the riches of his glory shine even brighter on those to whom he shows mercy, who were prepared in advance for glory.

always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light.

If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ so that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame.

Then I saw thrones, and the people sitting on them had been given the authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus and for proclaiming the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his statue, nor accepted his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They all came to life again, and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Then Samuel told them, “Gather all of Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.”
