Leviticus 26:1

New Living Translation

“Do not make idols or set up carved images, or sacred pillars, or sculptured stones in your land so you may worship them. I am the Lord your God.

They set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles at the top of every hill and under every green tree.

They rejected all the commands of the Lord their God and made two calves from metal. They set up an Asherah pole and worshiped Baal and all the forces of heaven.

They had followed the practices of the pagan nations the Lord had driven from the land ahead of them, as well as the practices the kings of Israel had introduced.

They angered God by building shrines to other gods; they made him jealous with their idols.

Those who worship idols are disgraced— all who brag about their worthless gods— for every god must bow to him.

“I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.

Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.

You must not worship the gods of these nations or serve them in any way or imitate their evil practices. Instead, you must utterly destroy them and smash their sacred pillars.

You must not make any gods of molten metal for yourselves.

On that day of judgment they will abandon the gold and silver idols they made for themselves to worship. They will leave their gods to the rodents and bats,

“Do not put your trust in idols or make metal images of gods for yourselves. I am the Lord your God.

For the people of Israel belong to me. They are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

The right thigh must always be given to the priest who offers the blood and the fat of the peace offering.

you must drive out all the people living there. You must destroy all their carved and molten images and demolish all their pagan shrines.

And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.

‘Cursed is anyone who carves or casts an idol and secretly sets it up. These idols, the work of craftsmen, are detestable to the Lord.’ And all the people will reply, ‘Amen.’

“I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.

Outside the city are the dogs—the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.

Then they set up the carved image, and they appointed Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, as their priest. This family continued as priests for the tribe of Dan until the Exile.
