Lord, remember what has happened to us. See how we have been disgraced!

They said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”

“Please remember what you told your servant Moses: ‘If you are unfaithful to me, I will scatter you among the nations.

Then I prayed, “Hear us, our God, for we are being mocked. May their scoffing fall back on their own heads, and may they themselves become captives in a foreign land!

Remember that you made me from dust— will you turn me back to dust so soon?

O God, remember that my life is but a breath, and I will never again feel happiness.

Look upon my suffering and rescue me, for I have not forgotten your instructions.

See how these enemies insult you, Lord. A foolish nation has dishonored your name.

O Lord, pay back our neighbors seven times for the scorn they have hurled at you.

We are mocked by our neighbors, an object of scorn and derision to those around us.

O Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen on your walls; they will pray day and night, continually. Take no rest, all you who pray to the Lord.

Then I said, “Lord, you know what’s happening to me. Please step in and help me. Punish my persecutors! Please give me time; don’t let me die young. It’s for your sake that I am suffering.

“We are ashamed,” the people say. “We are insulted and disgraced because the Lord’s Temple has been defiled by foreigners.”

Her people groan as they search for bread. They have sold their treasures for food to stay alive. “O Lord, look,” she mourns, “and see how I am despised.

“Lord, see my anguish! My heart is broken and my soul despairs, for I have rebelled against you. In the streets the sword kills, and at home there is only death.

She defiled herself with immorality and gave no thought to her future. Now she lies in the gutter with no one to lift her out. “Lord, see my misery,” she cries. “The enemy has triumphed.”

All who pass by jeer at you. They scoff and insult beautiful Jerusalem, saying, “Is this the city called ‘Most Beautiful in All the World’ and ‘Joy of All the Earth’?”

“O Lord, think about this! Should you treat your own people this way? Should mothers eat their own children, those they once bounced on their knees? Should priests and prophets be killed within the Lord’s Temple?

The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words.

until the Lord looks down from heaven and sees.

Lord, you have heard the vile names they call me. You know all about the plans they have made.

I have heard all about you, Lord. I am filled with awe by your amazing works. In this time of our deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by. And in your anger, remember your mercy.

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”
