Why is life given to those with no future, those God has surrounded with difficulties?

You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.

So the officials took Jeremiah from his cell and lowered him by ropes into an empty cistern in the prison yard. It belonged to Malkijah, a member of the royal family. There was no water in the cistern, but there was a thick layer of mud at the bottom, and Jeremiah sank down into it.

But I am going to take off your chains and let you go. If you want to come with me to Babylon, you are welcome. I will see that you are well cared for. But if you don’t want to come, you may stay here. The whole land is before you—go wherever you like.

“He wove my sins into ropes to hitch me to a yoke of captivity. The Lord sapped my strength and turned me over to my enemies; I am helpless in their hands.

He has blocked my way with a high stone wall; he has made my road crooked.

Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are exhausted but are given no rest.

You have kept your word and done to us and our rulers exactly as you warned. Never has there been such a disaster as happened in Jerusalem.

“For this reason I will fence her in with thornbushes. I will block her path with a wall to make her lose her way.
