“I know the Lord has given you this land,” she told them. “We are all afraid of you. Everyone in the land is living in terror.

As they set out, a terror from God spread over the people in all the towns of that area, so no one attacked Jacob’s family.

Then even the bravest soldiers, though they have the heart of a lion, will be paralyzed with fear. For all Israel knows what a mighty warrior your father is and how courageous his men are.

Then Naaman and his entire party went back to find the man of God. They stood before him, and Naaman said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”

For the Lord had caused the Aramean army to hear the clatter of speeding chariots and the galloping of horses and the sounds of a great army approaching. “The king of Israel has hired the Hittites and Egyptians to attack us!” they cried to one another.

When our enemies and the surrounding nations heard about it, they were frightened and humiliated. They realized this work had been done with the help of our God.

In every province and city, wherever the king’s decree arrived, the Jews rejoiced and had a great celebration and declared a public festival and holiday. And many of the people of the land became Jews themselves, for they feared what the Jews might do to them.

“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last.

The wicked will see this and be infuriated. They will grind their teeth in anger; they will slink away, their hopes thwarted.

The heavens belong to the Lord, but he has given the earth to all humanity.

I know now that the Lord is greater than all other gods, because he rescued his people from the oppression of the proud Egyptians.”

“I will send my terror ahead of you and create panic among all the people whose lands you invade. I will make all your enemies turn and run.

But even though a person sins a hundred times and still lives a long time, I know that those who fear God will be better off.

This message came to me concerning Egypt: Look! The Lord is advancing against Egypt, riding on a swift cloud. The idols of Egypt tremble. The hearts of the Egyptians melt with fear.

When Egypt hears the news about Tyre, there will be great sorrow.

With my great strength and powerful arm I made the earth and all its people and every animal. I can give these things of mine to anyone I choose.

Soon the city is plundered, empty, and ruined. Hearts melt and knees shake. The people stand aghast, their faces pale and trembling.

While Moses was at Kadesh, he sent ambassadors to the king of Edom with this message: “This is what your relatives, the people of Israel, say: You know all the hardships we have been through.

“The time has come for Aaron to join his ancestors in death. He will not enter the land I am giving the people of Israel, because the two of you rebelled against my instructions concerning the water at Meribah.

Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?’

No one will be able to stand against you, for the Lord your God will cause the people to fear and dread you, as he promised, wherever you go in the whole land.

Beginning today I will make people throughout the earth terrified because of you. When they hear reports about you, they will tremble with dread and fear.’”

Then all the nations of the world will see that you are a people claimed by the Lord, and they will stand in awe of you.

When the Most High assigned lands to the nations, when he divided up the human race, he established the boundaries of the peoples according to the number in his heavenly court.

It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed with the people in her city who refused to obey God. For she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

No wonder our hearts have melted in fear! No one has the courage to fight after hearing such things. For the Lord your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below.

“The Lord has given us the whole land,” they said, “for all the people in the land are terrified of us.”

Before the spies went to sleep that night, Rahab went up on the roof to talk with them.

When all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings who lived along the Mediterranean coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan River so the people of Israel could cross, they lost heart and were paralyzed with fear because of them.

But the Lord said to Joshua, “I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors.

We have also heard what he did to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan River—King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan (who lived in Ashtaroth).

They replied, “We did it because we—your servants—were clearly told that the Lord your God commanded his servant Moses to give you this entire land and to destroy all the people living in it. So we feared greatly for our lives because of you. That is why we have done this.

They answered, “Your servants have come from a very distant country. We have heard of the might of the Lord your God and of all he did in Egypt.

His companion answered, “Your dream can mean only one thing—God has given Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite, victory over Midian and all its allies!”
