but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them.

Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.

“For the past twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, until now—the Lord has been giving me his messages. I have faithfully passed them on to you, but you have not listened.

My people have turned their backs on me and have refused to return. Even though I diligently taught them, they would not receive instruction or obey.

“Again and again I sent my servants, the prophets, to plead with them, ‘Don’t do these horrible things that I hate so much.’

Then Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there teaching every day.

Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.

The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him.

He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.

Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.

Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.

Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the section of the Temple known as the Treasury. But he was not arrested, because his time had not yet come.

As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.

So at daybreak the apostles entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began teaching. When the high priest and his officials arrived, they convened the high council—the full assembly of the elders of Israel. Then they sent for the apostles to be brought from the jail for trial.
