Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.

Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.

“Listen to me, you who know right from wrong, you who cherish my law in your hearts. Do not be afraid of people’s scorn, nor fear their insults.

“Are you afraid of these idols? Do they terrify you? Is that why you have lied to me and forgotten me and my words? Is it because of my long silence that you no longer fear me?

Hear this message from the Lord, all you who tremble at his words: “Your own people hate you and throw you out for being loyal to my name. ‘Let the Lord be honored!’ they scoff. ‘Be joyful in him!’ But they will be put to shame.

“But I am afraid to surrender,” the king said, “for the Babylonians may hand me over to the Judeans who have defected to them. And who knows what they will do to me!”

“Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.

“I tell you the truth, everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, the Son of Man will also acknowledge in the presence of God’s angels.

Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people,

What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man.

for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them and believed in Jesus.

For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.

Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.

After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”

But no one had the courage to speak favorably about him in public, for they were afraid of getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders.

Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in him. “After all,” they said, “would you expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man has done?”

His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue.

“You were born a total sinner!” they answered. “Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw him out of the synagogue.

The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.

For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God.

This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God.
