Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts.

May the Lord cut off their flattering lips and silence their boastful tongues.

O deceptive tongue, what will God do to you? How will he increase your punishment?

Do not drag me away with the wicked— with those who do evil— those who speak friendly words to their neighbors while planning evil in their hearts.

They don’t talk of peace; they plot against innocent people who mind their own business.

His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!

I am surrounded by fierce lions who greedily devour human prey— whose teeth pierce like spears and arrows, and whose tongues cut like swords.

Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him.

Their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.

Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.

“Among my people are wicked men who lie in wait for victims like a hunter hiding in a blind. They continually set traps to catch people.

Should I not punish them for this?” says the Lord. “Should I not avenge myself against such a nation?

“My people bend their tongues like bows to shoot out lies. They refuse to stand up for the truth. They only go from bad to worse. They do not know me,” says the Lord.

“Beware of your neighbor! Don’t even trust your brother! For brother takes advantage of brother, and friend slanders friend.

They all fool and defraud each other; no one tells the truth. With practiced tongues they tell lies; they wear themselves out with all their sinning.

The rich among you have become wealthy through extortion and violence. Your citizens are so used to lying that their tongues can no longer tell the truth.
