But my people have stubborn and rebellious hearts. They have turned away and abandoned me.

Then they will not be like their ancestors— stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God.

For forty years I was angry with them, and I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’

Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick.

Though you are such wicked rebels, my people, come and return to the Lord.

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?

They surround Jerusalem like watchmen around a field, for my people have rebelled against me,” says the Lord.

So I will go and speak to their leaders. Surely they know the ways of the Lord and understand God’s laws.” But the leaders, too, as one man, had thrown off God’s yoke and broken his chains.

They are the worst kind of rebel, full of slander. They are as hard as bronze and iron, and they lead others into corruption.

For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me.

“When the people bring their sin offerings, the priests get fed. So the priests are glad when the people sin!

What sorrow awaits rebellious, polluted Jerusalem, the city of violence and crime!

“Suppose a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or mother, even though they discipline him.

For I know how rebellious and stubborn you are. Even now, while I am still alive and am here with you, you have rebelled against the Lord. How much more rebellious will you be after my death!

Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.
