Then the officials and the people said to the priests and prophets, “This man does not deserve the death sentence, for he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.”

If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?”

Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers?

When people’s lives please the Lord, even their enemies are at peace with them.

The priests and prophets presented their accusations to the officials and the people. “This man should die!” they said. “You have heard with your own ears what a traitor he is, for he has prophesied against this city.”

The officials and all the people had obeyed the king’s command,

“You and Jeremiah should both hide,” the officials told Baruch. “Don’t tell anyone where you are!”

Even when Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah begged the king not to burn the scroll, he wouldn’t listen.

They were furious with Jeremiah and had him flogged and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary. Jonathan’s house had been converted into a prison.

The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, “This man truly was the Son of God!”

We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”

When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.”

I soon discovered the charge was something regarding their religious law—certainly nothing worthy of imprisonment or death.

So there was a great uproar. Some of the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees jumped up and began to argue forcefully. “We see nothing wrong with him,” they shouted. “Perhaps a spirit or an angel spoke to him.”

But in my opinion he has done nothing deserving death. However, since he appealed his case to the emperor, I have decided to send him to Rome.
