Jeremiah 11:21

New Living Translation

This is what the Lord says about the men of Anathoth who wanted me dead. They had said, “We will kill you if you do not stop prophesying in the Lord’s name.”

They tell the seers, “Stop seeing visions!” They tell the prophets, “Don’t tell us what is right. Tell us nice things. Tell us lies.

These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests from the town of Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.

They will fight you, but they will fail. For I am with you, and I will take care of you. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me “The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten, “If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip. “He will trap himself,” they say, “and then we will get our revenge on him.”

But when Jeremiah had finished his message, saying everything the Lord had told him to say, the priests and prophets and all the people at the Temple mobbed him. “Kill him!” they shouted.

“Your cousin Hanamel son of Shallum will come and say to you, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth. By law you have the right to buy it before it is offered to anyone else.’”

I will give you to your enemies, and they will kill you. Your bodies will be food for the vultures and wild animals.

“But you caused the Nazirites to sin by making them drink wine, and you commanded the prophets, ‘Shut up!’

For the son despises his father. The daughter defies her mother. The daughter-in-law defies her mother-in-law. Your enemies are right in your own household!

“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.

But the farmers grabbed his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another.

Others seized his messengers and insulted them and killed them.

But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
