The Lord takes his place in court and presents his case against his people.

The Lord replies, “I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.”

Arise, O God, and defend your cause. Remember how these fools insult you all day long.

God presides over heaven’s court; he pronounces judgment on the heavenly beings:

“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.

This is what the Sovereign Lord, your God and Defender, says: “See, I have taken the terrible cup from your hands. You will drink no more of my fury.

The Lord will punish the world by fire and by his sword. He will judge the earth, and many will be killed by him.

“Let the nations be called to arms. Let them march to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There I, the Lord, will sit to pronounce judgment on them all.

Listen to what the Lord is saying: “Stand up and state your case against me. Let the mountains and hills be called to witness your complaints.

And now, O mountains, listen to the Lord’s complaint! He has a case against his people. He will bring charges against Israel.
