For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has a day of reckoning. He will punish the proud and mighty and bring down everything that is exalted.

You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them.

“Why doesn’t the Almighty bring the wicked to judgment? Why must the godly wait for him in vain?

Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp.

You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.

But the Lord just laughs, for he sees their day of judgment coming.

Arise, O Judge of the earth. Give the proud what they deserve.

The Lord detests the proud; they will surely be punished.

After the Lord has used the king of Assyria to accomplish his purposes on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, he will turn against the king of Assyria and punish him—for he is proud and arrogant.

But look! The Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, will chop down the mighty tree of Assyria with great power! He will cut down the proud. That lofty tree will be brought down.

“I, the Lord, will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their sin. I will crush the arrogance of the proud and humble the pride of the mighty.

Scream in terror, for the day of the Lord has arrived— the time for the Almighty to destroy.

For see, the day of the Lord is coming— the terrible day of his fury and fierce anger. The land will be made desolate, and all the sinners destroyed with it.

Instead, you will be brought down to the place of the dead, down to its lowest depths.

The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has done it to destroy your pride and bring low all earth’s nobility.

In that day the Lord will punish the gods in the heavens and the proud rulers of the nations on earth.

The earth mourns and dries up, and the land wastes away and withers. Even the greatest people on earth waste away.

He judges the great people of the world and brings them all to nothing.

I will level the mountains and hills and blight all their greenery. I will turn the rivers into dry land and will dry up all the pools.

Humanity will be destroyed, and people brought down; even the arrogant will lower their eyes in humiliation.

He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.

My chosen people act like speckled vultures, but they themselves are surrounded by vultures. Bring on the wild animals to pick their corpses clean!

“This is what the Lord says: This shows how I will rot away the pride of Judah and Jerusalem.

In all history there has never been such a time of terror. It will be a time of trouble for my people Israel. Yet in the end they will be saved!

For this is the day of the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, a day of vengeance on his enemies. The sword will devour until it is satisfied, yes, until it is drunk with your blood! The Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, will receive a sacrifice today in the north country beside the Euphrates River.

“See, I am your enemy, you arrogant people,” says the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “Your day of reckoning has arrived— the day when I will punish you.

They have done nothing to repair the breaks in the walls around the nation. They have not helped it to stand firm in battle on the day of the Lord.

“Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proud.”

What sorrow awaits you who say, “If only the day of the Lord were here!” You have no idea what you are wishing for. That day will bring darkness, not light.

But this is what the Lord says: “I will reward your evil with evil; you won’t be able to pull your neck out of the noose. You will no longer walk around proudly, for it will be a terrible time.”

I will tear down your walls and demolish your defenses.

a day of trumpet calls and battle cries. Down go the walled cities and the strongest battlements!

On that day you will no longer need to be ashamed, for you will no longer be rebels against me. I will remove all proud and arrogant people from among you. There will be no more haughtiness on my holy mountain.

The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says, “The day of judgment is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed—roots, branches, and all.

“Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives.

But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns.

For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night.

And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
