Oh, what a sinful nation they are— loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil people, corrupt children who have rejected the Lord. They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.

But the people of this area were extremely wicked and constantly sinned against the Lord.

He abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors, and he refused to follow the Lord’s ways.

But when Rehoboam was firmly established and strong, he abandoned the Law of the Lord, and all Israel followed him in this sin.

Jotham did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight. He did everything his father, Uzziah, had done, except that Jotham did not sin by entering the Temple of the Lord. But the people continued in their corrupt ways.

We have sinned terribly by not obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us through your servant Moses.

These wicked people are born sinners; even from birth they have lied and gone their own way.

Then I will praise you with music on the harp, because you are faithful to your promises, O my God. I will sing praises to you with a lyre, O Holy One of Israel.

Oh, how often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved his heart in that dry wasteland.

Again and again they tested God’s patience and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

They turned back and were as faithless as their parents. They were as undependable as a crooked bow.

Then they will not be like their ancestors— stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God.

Yes, our protection comes from the Lord, and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king.

The Lord told Moses, “Quick! Go down the mountain! Your people whom you brought from the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.

Your leaders are rebels, the companions of thieves. All of them love bribes and demand payoffs, but they refuse to defend the cause of orphans or fight for the rights of widows.

But rebels and sinners will be completely destroyed, and those who desert the Lord will be consumed.

I am sending Assyria against a godless nation, against a people with whom I am angry. Assyria will plunder them, trampling them like dirt beneath its feet.

Let all the people of Jerusalem shout his praise with joy! For great is the Holy One of Israel who lives among you.”

You will not be given a proper burial, for you have destroyed your nation and slaughtered your people. The descendants of such an evil person will never again receive honor.

The humble will be filled with fresh joy from the Lord. The poor will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

For Jerusalem will stumble, and Judah will fall, because they speak out against the Lord and refuse to obey him. They provoke him to his face.

“What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,” says the Lord. “You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins.

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.

that these people are stubborn rebels who refuse to pay attention to the Lord’s instructions.

In his wisdom, the Lord will send great disaster; he will not change his mind. He will rise against the wicked and against their helpers.

“Whom have you been defying and ridiculing? Against whom did you raise your voice? At whom did you look with such haughty eyes? It was the Holy One of Israel!

Though you are a lowly worm, O Jacob, don’t be afraid, people of Israel, for I will help you. I am the Lord, your Redeemer. I am the Holy One of Israel.’

You will toss them into the air, and the wind will blow them all away; a whirlwind will scatter them. Then you will rejoice in the Lord. You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.

I am doing this so all who see this miracle will understand what it means— that it is the Lord who has done this, the Holy One of Israel who created it.

They even mock God and say, “Hurry up and do something! We want to see what you can do. Let the Holy One of Israel carry out his plan, for we want to know what it is.”

Therefore, just as fire licks up stubble and dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will rot and their flowers wither. For they have rejected the law of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies; they have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

I was angry, so I punished these greedy people. I withdrew from them, but they kept going on their own stubborn way.

Yet they act so pious! They come to the Temple every day and seem delighted to learn all about me. They act like a righteous nation that would never abandon the laws of its God. They ask me to take action on their behalf, pretending they want to be near me.

“But because the rest of you have forsaken the Lord and have forgotten his Temple, and because you have prepared feasts to honor the god of Fate and have offered mixed wine to the god of Destiny,

All day long they insult me to my face by worshiping idols in their sacred gardens. They burn incense on pagan altars.

That is why the Lord takes no pleasure in the young men and shows no mercy even to the widows and orphans. For they are all wicked hypocrites, and they all speak foolishness. But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike.

You have abandoned me and turned your back on me,” says the Lord. “Therefore, I will raise my fist to destroy you. I am tired of always giving you another chance.

“For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me— the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!

And you have brought this upon yourselves by rebelling against the Lord your God, even though he was leading you on the way!

Your wickedness will bring its own punishment. Your turning from me will shame you. You will see what an evil, bitter thing it is to abandon the Lord your God and not to fear him. I, the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!

“O my people, listen to the words of the Lord! Have I been like a desert to Israel? Have I been to them a land of darkness? Why then do my people say, ‘At last we are free from God! We don’t need him anymore!’

“How you plot and scheme to win your lovers. Even an experienced prostitute could learn from you!

This is what the Lord says: “What did your ancestors find wrong with me that led them to stray so far from me? They worshiped worthless idols, only to become worthless themselves.

“The sins of Israel and Judah—the sins of the people of Jerusalem, the kings, the officials, the priests, and the prophets—have stirred up my anger.

“Send out a call for archers to come to Babylon. Surround the city so none can escape. Do to her as she has done to others, for she has defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has not abandoned Israel and Judah. He is still their God, even though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.”

Am I the one they are hurting?” asks the Lord. “Most of all, they hurt themselves, to their own shame.”

But my people have not listened to me or even tried to hear. They have been stubborn and sinful—even worse than their ancestors.

I will do this to capture the minds and hearts of all my people who have turned from me to worship their detestable idols.’

Prostitutes charge for their services—but not you! You give gifts to your lovers, bribing them to come and have sex with you.

For your mother loathed her husband and her children, and so do you. And you are exactly like your sisters, for they despised their husbands and their children. Truly your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

All Israel has disobeyed your instruction and turned away, refusing to listen to your voice. “So now the solemn curses and judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured down on us because of our sin.

And I will destroy those who used to worship me but now no longer do. They no longer ask for the Lord’s guidance or seek my blessings.”

But here you are, a brood of sinners, doing exactly the same thing! You are making the Lord even angrier with Israel.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of hell?

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptize, he denounced them. “You brood of snakes!” he exclaimed. “Who warned you to flee the coming wrath?

For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.

What? Do we dare to rouse the Lord’s jealousy? Do you think we are stronger than he is?

“And the answer will be, ‘This happened because the people of the land abandoned the covenant that the Lord, the God of their ancestors, made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

The Lord said to Moses, “You are about to die and join your ancestors. After you are gone, these people will begin to worship foreign gods, the gods of the land where they are going. They will abandon me and break my covenant that I have made with them.

“The Lord saw this and drew back, provoked to anger by his own sons and daughters.

“But they have acted corruptly toward him; when they act so perversely, are they really his children? They are a deceitful and twisted generation.

I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for his body, the church.

For her sins are piled as high as heaven, and God remembers her evil deeds.

Finally, they cried out to the Lord for help, saying, “We have sinned against you because we have abandoned you as our God and have served the images of Baal.”
