Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine. Rulers should not crave alcohol.

But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys himself.

Extortion turns wise people into fools, and bribes corrupt the heart.

Now, however, Israel is led by drunks who reel with wine and stagger with alcohol. The priests and prophets stagger with alcohol and lose themselves in wine. They reel when they see visions and stagger as they render decisions.

They furnish wine and lovely music at their grand parties— lyre and harp, tambourine and flute— but they never think about the Lord or notice what he is doing.

“I saw that the prophets of Samaria were terribly evil, for they prophesied in the name of Baal and led my people of Israel into sin.

They ask a piece of wood for advice! They think a stick can tell them the future! Longing after idols has made them foolish. They have played the prostitute, serving other gods and deserting their God.

Your deeds won’t let you return to your God. You are a prostitute through and through, and you do not know the Lord.

“The people of Israel have become like silly, witless doves, first calling to Egypt, then flying to Assyria for help.

“You and your descendants must never drink wine or any other alcoholic drink before going into the Tabernacle. If you do, you will die. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation.

“Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,
