Now they continue to sin by making silver idols, images shaped skillfully with human hands. “Sacrifice to these,” they cry, “and kiss the calf idols!”

“You must not bring the prisoners here!” they declared. “We cannot afford to add to our sins and guilt. Our guilt is already great, and the Lord’s fierce anger is already turned against Israel.”

But unlike his father, he did not humble himself before the Lord. Instead, Amon sinned even more.

Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities— for his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him!

Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick.

“What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,” says the Lord. “You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins.

All who worship idols will be disgraced along with all these craftsmen—mere humans— who claim they can make a god. They may all stand together, but they will stand in terror and shame.

“Gather together and come, you fugitives from surrounding nations. What fools they are who carry around their wooden idols and pray to gods that cannot save!

Some people pour out their silver and gold and hire a craftsman to make a god from it. Then they bow down and worship it!

“Do not forget this! Keep it in mind! Remember this, you guilty ones.

They decorate it with gold and silver and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails so it won’t fall over.

People who worship idols are stupid and foolish. The things they worship are made of wood!

Then why do these people stay on their self-destructive path? Why do the people of Jerusalem refuse to turn back? They cling tightly to their lies and will not turn around.

How prosperous Israel is— a luxuriant vine loaded with fruit. But the richer the people get, the more pagan altars they build. The more bountiful their harvests, the more beautiful their sacred pillars.

The people of Samaria tremble in fear for their calf idol at Beth-aven, and they mourn for it. Though its priests rejoice over it, its glory will be stripped away.

But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols.

War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans.

Assyria cannot save us, nor can our warhorses. Never again will we say to the idols we have made, ‘You are our gods.’ No, in you alone do the orphans find mercy.”

She doesn’t realize it was I who gave her everything she has— the grain, the new wine, the olive oil; I even gave her silver and gold. But she gave all my gifts to Baal.

Leave Israel alone, because she is married to idolatry.

The people have appointed kings without my consent, and princes without my approval. By making idols for themselves from their silver and gold, they have brought about their own destruction.

“O Samaria, I reject this calf— this idol you have made. My fury burns against you. How long will you be incapable of innocence?

This calf you worship, O Israel, was crafted by your own hands! It is not God! Therefore, it must be smashed to bits.

But here you are, a brood of sinners, doing exactly the same thing! You are making the Lord even angrier with Israel.

And do you remember God’s reply? He said, “No, I have 7,000 others who have never bowed down to Baal!”

But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived.

Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it over Saul’s head. He kissed Saul and said, “I am doing this because the Lord has appointed you to be the ruler over Israel, his special possession.
