When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily. But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability.

Then they will say, “We have no king because we didn’t fear the Lord. But even if we had a king, what could he do for us anyway?”

Samaria and its king will be cut off; they will float away like driftwood on an ocean wave.

This shows that Israel will go a long time without a king or prince, and without sacrifices, sacred pillars, priests, or even idols!

The people have appointed kings without my consent, and princes without my approval. By making idols for themselves from their silver and gold, they have brought about their own destruction.

Later Samuel called all the people of Israel to meet before the Lord at Mizpah.

But though I have rescued you from your misery and distress, you have rejected your God today and have said, ‘No, we want a king instead!’ Now, therefore, present yourselves before the Lord by tribes and clans.”

Then Samuel addressed all Israel: “I have done as you asked and given you a king.

All right, here is the king you have chosen. You asked for him, and the Lord has granted your request.

But Samuel replied, “I will not go back with you! Since you have rejected the Lord’s command, he has rejected you as king of Israel.”

Now the Lord said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.”
