These were descendants of the nations whom the people of Israel had not completely destroyed. So Solomon conscripted them as slaves, and they serve as forced laborers to this day.

Yes, joyful are those who live like this! Joyful indeed are those whose God is the Lord.

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are their ancestors, and Christ himself was an Israelite as far as his human nature is concerned. And he is God, the one who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

“There is no one like the God of Israel. He rides across the heavens to help you, across the skies in majestic splendor.

But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

May you be cursed! From now on you will always be servants who cut wood and carry water for the house of my God.”

When the Israelites grew stronger, they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves, but they never did drive them completely out of the land.
