For forty days the floodwaters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth.

Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created.”

The underground waters stopped flowing, and the torrential rains from the sky were stopped.

So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God.

This happened when I was on the mountain receiving the tablets of stone inscribed with the words of the covenant that the Lord had made with you. I was there for forty days and forty nights, and all that time I ate no food and drank no water.

Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood.
