When Joseph’s brothers saw him coming, they recognized him in the distance. As he approached, they made plans to kill him.

Then they grabbed him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by, Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to them for twenty pieces of silver. And the traders took him to Egypt.

But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.

Speaking among themselves, they said, “Clearly we are being punished because of what we did to Joseph long ago. We saw his anguish when he pleaded for his life, but we wouldn’t listen. That’s why we’re in this trouble.”

“Joseph is the foal of a wild donkey, the foal of a wild donkey at a spring— one of the wild donkeys on the ridge.

But his bow remained taut, and his arms were strengthened by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, by the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel.

My enemies did their best to kill me, but the Lord rescued me.

They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows.

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

where they strengthened the believers. They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God.
