Genesis 47:4

New Living Translation

We have come to live here in Egypt for a while, for there is no pasture for our flocks in Canaan. The famine is very severe there. So please, we request permission to live in the region of Goshen.”

At that time a severe famine struck the land of Canaan, forcing Abram to go down to Egypt, where he lived as a foreigner.

Then the Lord said to Abram, “You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, where they will be oppressed as slaves for 400 years.

But the famine continued to ravage the land of Canaan.

You can live in the region of Goshen, where you can be near me with all your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and everything you own.

you must tell him, ‘We, your servants, have raised livestock all our lives, as our ancestors have always done.’ When you tell him this, he will let you live here in the region of Goshen, for the Egyptians despise shepherds.”

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Now that your father and brothers have joined you here,

Then Israel arrived in Egypt; Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Long ago my people chose to live in Egypt. Now they are oppressed by Assyria.

“But a famine came upon Egypt and Canaan. There was great misery, and our ancestors ran out of food.

God also told him that his descendants would live in a foreign land, where they would be oppressed as slaves for 400 years.

“You must then say in the presence of the Lord your God, ‘My ancestor Jacob was a wandering Aramean who went to live as a foreigner in Egypt. His family arrived few in number, but in Egypt they became a large and mighty nation.
