Genesis 47:26

New Living Translation

Joseph then issued a decree still in effect in the land of Egypt, that Pharaoh should receive one-fifth of all the crops grown on his land. Only the land belonging to the priests was not given to Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh should appoint supervisors over the land and let them collect one-fifth of all the crops during the seven good years.

The only land he did not buy was the land belonging to the priests. They received an allotment of food directly from Pharaoh, so they didn’t need to sell their land.

“You have saved our lives!” they exclaimed. “May it please you, my lord, to let us be Pharaoh’s servants.”

I also decree that no priest, Levite, singer, gatekeeper, Temple servant, or other worker in this Temple of God will be required to pay tribute, customs, or tolls of any kind.’

I will bring the most ruthless of nations to occupy their homes. I will break down their proud fortresses and defile their sanctuaries.

“One-tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy.

As for the tribe of Levi, your relatives, I will compensate them for their service in the Tabernacle. Instead of an allotment of land, I will give them the tithes from the entire land of Israel.

“You must set aside a tithe of your crops—one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year.

“Every third year you must offer a special tithe of your crops. In this year of the special tithe you must give your tithes to the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows, so that they will have enough to eat in your towns.
