The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (though Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.

Once again Leah became pregnant and gave birth to another son. She named him Judah, for she said, “Now I will praise the Lord!” And then she stopped having children.

But the Lord considered it evil for Onan to deny a child to his dead brother. So the Lord took Onan’s life, too.

Then she became pregnant again and gave birth to another son, and she named him Onan.

And when she gave birth to a third son, she named him Shelah. At the time of Shelah’s birth, they were living at Kezib.

But Er was a wicked man in the Lord’s sight, so the Lord took his life.

What I mean is, our Lord came from the tribe of Judah, and Moses never mentioned priests coming from that tribe.

But one of the twenty-four elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

The Lord answered, “Judah, for I have given them victory over the land.”

And may the Lord give you descendants by this young woman who will be like those of our ancestor Perez, the son of Tamar and Judah.”
