Then Joseph hurried from the room because he was overcome with emotion for his brother. He went into his private room, where he broke down and wept.

Now he turned away from them and began to weep. When he regained his composure, he spoke to them again. Then he chose Simeon from among them and had him tied up right before their eyes.

Then he broke down and wept. He wept so loudly the Egyptians could hear him, and word of it quickly carried to Pharaoh’s palace.

Joseph prepared his chariot and traveled to Goshen to meet his father, Jacob. When Joseph arrived, he embraced his father and wept, holding him for a long time.

Then the woman who was the real mother of the living child, and who loved him very much, cried out, “Oh no, my lord! Give her the child—please do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “All right, he will be neither yours nor mine; divide him between us!”

“Is not Israel still my son, my darling child?” says the Lord. “I often have to punish him, but I still love him. That’s why I long for him and surely will have mercy on him.

“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows.

I have done the Lord’s work humbly and with many tears. I have endured the trials that came to me from the plots of the Jews.

Watch out! Remember the three years I was with you—my constant watch and care over you night and day, and my many tears for you.

They all cried as they embraced and kissed him good-bye.

God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus.

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate?

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

I long to see you again, for I remember your tears as we parted. And I will be filled with joy when we are together again.

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?
