Genesis 42:2

New Living Translation

I have heard there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy enough grain to keep us alive. Otherwise we’ll die.”

So Joseph’s ten older brothers went down to Egypt to buy grain.

When the grain they had brought from Egypt was almost gone, Jacob said to his sons, “Go back and buy us a little more food.”

If you send Benjamin with us, we will go down and buy more food.

Judah said to his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will be on our way. Otherwise we will all die of starvation—and not only we, but you and our little ones.

“Now hurry back to my father and tell him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me master over all the land of Egypt. So come down to me immediately!

I will not die; instead, I will live to tell what the Lord has done.

But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love.

He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine.

About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this message: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Set your affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from this illness.’”

But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

Jacob heard that there was still grain in Egypt, so he sent his sons—our ancestors—to buy some.
