New Living Translation

If you really are honest men, choose one of your brothers to remain in prison. The rest of you may go home with grain for your starving families.

and he put them in the prison where Joseph was, in the palace of the captain of the guard.

So with severe famine everywhere, Joseph opened up the storehouses and distributed grain to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe throughout the land of Egypt.

We are all brothers—members of the same family. We are honest men, sir! We are not spies!”

On the third day Joseph said to them, “I am a God-fearing man. If you do as I say, you will live.

But you must bring your youngest brother back to me. This will prove that you are telling the truth, and you will not die.” To this they agreed.

So the brothers loaded their donkeys with the grain and headed for home.

“Then the man who is governor of the land told us, ‘This is how I will find out if you are honest men. Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take grain for your starving families and go on home.

He also sent his father ten male donkeys loaded with the finest products of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other supplies he would need on his journey.

But his own people have been robbed and plundered, enslaved, imprisoned, and trapped. They are fair game for anyone and have no one to protect them, no one to take them back home.

You will open the eyes of the blind. You will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons.

They were furious with Jeremiah and had him flogged and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary. Jonathan’s house had been converted into a prison.
