“Yes, you are!” Joseph insisted. “You have come to see how vulnerable our land has become.”

But Joseph insisted, “As I said, you are spies!

One of you must go and get your brother. I’ll keep the rest of you here in prison. Then we’ll find out whether or not your story is true. By the life of Pharaoh, if it turns out that you don’t have a younger brother, then I’ll know you are spies.”

But you must bring your youngest brother back to me. This will prove that you are telling the truth, and you will not die.” To this they agreed.

“The man who is governor of the land spoke very harshly to us,” they told him. “He accused us of being spies scouting the land.

Joseph recognized his brothers instantly, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where are you from?” he demanded. “From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We have come to buy food.”

But Judah said, “The man was serious when he warned us, ‘You won’t see my face again unless your brother is with you.’

But if you don’t let Benjamin go, we won’t go either. Remember, the man said, ‘You won’t see my face again unless your brother is with you.’”

But even when they are under oath, saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’ they are still telling lies!”

“How can I pardon you? For even your children have turned from me. They have sworn by gods that are not gods at all! I fed my people until they were full. But they thanked me by committing adultery and lining up at the brothels.

You must fear the Lord your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his name.

But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.
