But Onan was not willing to have a child who would not be his own heir. So whenever he had intercourse with his brother’s wife, he spilled the semen on the ground. This prevented her from having a child who would belong to his brother.

But the Lord considered it evil for Onan to deny a child to his dead brother. So the Lord took Onan’s life, too.

Surely resentment destroys the fool, and jealousy kills the simple.

Anger is cruel, and wrath is like a flood, but jealousy is even more dangerous.

“If two brothers are living together on the same property and one of them dies without a son, his widow may not be married to anyone from outside the family. Instead, her husband’s brother should marry her and have intercourse with her to fulfill the duties of a brother-in-law.

The first son she bears to him will be considered the son of the dead brother, so that his name will not be forgotten in Israel.

Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other.

But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.

For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him.

But Naomi replied, “Why should you go on with me? Can I still give birth to other sons who could grow up to be your husbands?

And with the land I have acquired Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon, to be my wife. This way she can have a son to carry on the family name of her dead husband and to inherit the family property here in his hometown. You are all witnesses today.”
