Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not been able to bear children for him. But she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar.

So Hagar gave Abram a son, and Abram named him Ishmael.

As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will make him extremely fruitful and multiply his descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

When Isaac grew up and was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion.

The runners went from town to town throughout Ephraim and Manasseh and as far as the territory of Zebulun. But most of the people just laughed at the runners and made fun of them.

But the people mocked these messengers of God and despised their words. They scoffed at the prophets until the Lord’s anger could no longer be restrained and nothing could be done.

“But now I am mocked by people younger than I, by young men whose fathers are not worthy to run with my sheepdogs.

But I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned and despised by all!

Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?”

Even children are known by the way they act, whether their conduct is pure, and whether it is right.

Throw out the mocker, and fighting goes, too. Quarrels and insults will disappear.

In the midst of her sadness and wandering, Jerusalem remembers her ancient splendor. But now she has fallen to her enemy, and there is no one to help her. Her enemy struck her down and laughed as she fell.

The Scriptures say that Abraham had two sons, one from his slave wife and one from his freeborn wife.

But you are now being persecuted by those who want you to keep the law, just as Ishmael, the child born by human effort, persecuted Isaac, the child born by the power of the Spirit.

Some were jeered at, and their backs were cut open with whips. Others were chained in prisons.
