New Living Translation

“Swear to me in God’s name that you will never deceive me, my children, or any of my descendants. I have been loyal to you, so now swear that you will be loyal to me and to this country where you are living as a foreigner.”

Then Abimelech took some of his sheep and goats, cattle, and male and female servants, and he presented them to Abraham. He also returned his wife, Sarah, to him.

Abraham replied, “Yes, I swear to it!”

Swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not allow my son to marry one of these local Canaanite women.

They replied, “We can plainly see that the Lord is with you. So we want to enter into a sworn treaty with you. Let’s make a covenant.

You must fear the Lord your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his name.

Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding.

But if he is angry and wants you killed, may the Lord strike me and even kill me if I don’t warn you so you can escape and live. May the Lord be with you as he used to be with my father.

And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.

At last Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for we have sworn loyalty to each other in the Lord’s name. The Lord is the witness of a bond between us and our children forever.” Then David left, and Jonathan returned to the town.

“Will you lead me to this band of raiders?” David asked. The young man replied, “If you take an oath in God’s name that you will not kill me or give me back to my master, then I will guide you to them.”
