God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars.

Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.” And that is what happened.

“Have I looked at the sun shining in the skies, or the moon walking down its silver pathway,

as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you twinkling stars!

Let every created thing give praise to the Lord, for he issued his command, and they came into being.

The sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat.

Both day and night belong to you; you made the starlight and the sun.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place—

The heavens will be black above them; the stars will give no light. The sun will be dark when it rises, and the moon will provide no light.

Then the glory of the moon will wane, and the brightness of the sun will fade, for the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will rule on Mount Zion. He will rule in great glory in Jerusalem, in the sight of all the leaders of his people.

Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing.

I create the light and make the darkness. I send good times and bad times. I, the Lord, am the one who does these things.

It is the Lord who provides the sun to light the day and the moon and stars to light the night, and who stirs the sea into roaring waves. His name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, and this is what he says:

The sun and moon stood still in the sky as your brilliant arrows flew and your glittering spear flashed.

“Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.

The sun has one kind of glory, while the moon and stars each have another kind. And even the stars differ from each other in their glory.

And when you look up into the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars—all the forces of heaven—don’t be seduced into worshiping them. The Lord your God gave them to all the peoples of the earth.

And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.
