“Is that so?” retorted Pharaoh. “And who is the Lord? Why should I listen to him and let Israel go? I don’t know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go.”

What god of any nation has ever been able to save its people from my power? So what makes you think that the Lord can rescue Jerusalem from me?”

Which of their gods was able to rescue its people from the destructive power of my predecessors? What makes you think your God can rescue you from me?

Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you! Don’t let him fool you like this! I say it again—no god of any nation or kingdom has ever yet been able to rescue his people from me or my ancestors. How much less will your God rescue you from my power!”

These officers talked about the God of Jerusalem as though he were one of the pagan gods, made by human hands.

You displayed miraculous signs and wonders against Pharaoh, his officials, and all his people, for you knew how arrogantly they were treating our ancestors. You have a glorious reputation that has never been forgotten.

For they shake their fists at God, defying the Almighty.

Holding their strong shields, they defiantly charge against him.

Who is the Almighty, and why should we obey him? What good will it do us to pray?’

The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead.

They say, “We will lie to our hearts’ content. Our lips are our own—who can stop us?”

The Lord replies, “I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.”

Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!

“But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand forces him.

So this is what the Lord says: “I will show you that I am the Lord.” Look! I will strike the water of the Nile with this staff in my hand, and the river will turn to blood.

For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.

“But if you refuse to obey the Lord your God, and if you say, ‘We will not stay here;

“Let him stagger and fall like a drunkard, for he has rebelled against the Lord. Moab will wallow in his own vomit, ridiculed by all.

I will give you one more chance to bow down and worship the statue I have made when you hear the sound of the musical instruments. But if you refuse, you will be thrown immediately into the blazing furnace. And then what god will be able to rescue you from my power?”

This is because they have never known the Father or me.

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.

in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus.

After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.

Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the Lord
