Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said.

“And where is Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson?” the king asked him. “He stayed in Jerusalem,” Ziba replied. “He said, ‘Today I will get back the kingdom of my grandfather Saul.’”

Ziba has slandered me by saying that I refused to come. But I know that my lord the king is like an angel of God, so do what you think is best.

I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride.

O deceptive tongue, what will God do to you? How will he increase your punishment?

Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends.

Do not let me fall into their hands. For they accuse me of things I’ve never done; with every breath they threaten me with violence.

Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.

“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.

“Be sure never to charge anyone falsely with evil. Never sentence an innocent or blameless person to death, for I never declare a guilty person to be innocent.

Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool.

An honest witness tells the truth; a false witness tells lies.

An honest witness does not lie; a false witness breathes lies.

Wrongdoers eagerly listen to gossip; liars pay close attention to slander.

A corrupt witness makes a mockery of justice; the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.

A false witness will not go unpunished, nor will a liar escape.

A false witness will not go unpunished, and a liar will be destroyed.

A false witness will be cut off, but a credible witness will be allowed to speak.

Don’t testify against your neighbors without cause; don’t lie about them.

Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.

As surely as a north wind brings rain, so a gossiping tongue causes anger!

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me “The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten, “If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip. “He will trap himself,” they say, “and then we will get our revenge on him.”

“Do not steal. “Do not deceive or cheat one another.

“Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people. “Do not stand idly by when your neighbor’s life is threatened. I am the Lord.

“Which ones?” the man asked. And Jesus replied: “‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely.

Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”

“What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”

“Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?” he asked.

And some people even slander us by claiming that we say, “The more we sin, the better it is!” Those who say such things deserve to be condemned.

So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.

“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.

They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.

But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.

Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, “It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night.
