So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: How long will you refuse to submit to me? Let my people go, so they can worship me.

Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!” But the people were completely silent.

“Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has done this, I will not do what I promised during his lifetime. It will happen to his sons; I will destroy his dynasty.”

You were sorry and humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I said against this city and its people—that this land would be cursed and become desolate. You tore your clothing in despair and wept before me in repentance. And I have indeed heard you, says the Lord.

But while in deep distress, Manasseh sought the Lord his God and sincerely humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.

Manasseh’s prayer, the account of the way God answered him, and an account of all his sins and unfaithfulness are recorded in The Record of the Seers. It includes a list of the locations where he built pagan shrines and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself and repented.

You were sorry and humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this city and its people. You humbled yourself and tore your clothing in despair and wept before me in repentance. And I have indeed heard you, says the Lord.

If you refuse, watch out! For tomorrow I will bring a swarm of locusts on your country.

The Lord asked Moses, “How long will these people refuse to obey my commands and instructions?

I commanded you, “Let my son go, so he can worship me.” But since you have refused, I will now kill your firstborn son!’”

After this presentation to Israel’s leaders, Moses and Aaron went and spoke to Pharaoh. They told him, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Let my people go so they may hold a festival in my honor in the wilderness.”

But you still lord it over my people and refuse to let them go.

“How long, you simpletons, will you insist on being simpleminded? How long will you mockers relish your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge?

“I called you so often, but you wouldn’t come. I reached out to you, but you paid no attention.

Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor.

Why do you continue to invite punishment? Must you rebel forever? Your head is injured, and your heart is sick.

Human pride will be brought down, and human arrogance will be humbled. Only the Lord will be exalted on that day of judgment.

These wicked people refuse to listen to me. They stubbornly follow their own desires and worship other gods. Therefore, they will become like this loincloth—good for nothing!

Say to the king and his mother, “Come down from your thrones and sit in the dust, for your glorious crowns will soon be snatched from your heads.”

“Send out a call for archers to come to Babylon. Surround the city so none can escape. Do to her as she has done to others, for she has defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

but she has rebelled against my regulations and decrees and has been even more wicked than the surrounding nations. She has refused to obey the regulations and decrees I gave her to follow.

“You are his successor, O Belshazzar, and you knew all this, yet you have not humbled yourself.

“How long must I put up with this wicked community and its complaints about me? Yes, I have heard the complaints the Israelites are making against me.

Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?

Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven!

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
