New Living Translation

None of us can hold back our spirit from departing. None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death. There is no escaping that obligation, that dark battle. And in the face of death, wickedness will certainly not rescue the wicked.

All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him.

They went all the way to the Jordan River, following a trail of clothing and equipment that the Arameans had thrown away in their mad rush to escape. The scouts returned and told the king about it.

You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer.

If God were to take back his spirit and withdraw his breath,

The wicked will go down to the grave. This is the fate of all the nations who ignore God.

Wickedness never brings stability, but the godly have deep roots.

The wicked are crushed by disaster, but the godly have a refuge when they die.

For who can prove that the human spirit goes up and the spirit of animals goes down into the earth?

The wicked will not prosper, for they do not fear God. Their days will never grow long like the evening shadows.

People can never predict when hard times might come. Like fish in a net or birds in a trap, people are caught by sudden tragedy.

You boast, “We have struck a bargain to cheat death and have made a deal to dodge the grave. The coming destruction can never touch us, for we have built a strong refuge made of lies and deception.”

I will cancel the bargain you made to cheat death, and I will overturn your deal to dodge the grave. When the terrible enemy sweeps through, you will be trampled into the ground.

“You felt secure in your wickedness. ‘No one sees me,’ you said. But your ‘wisdom’ and ‘knowledge’ have led you astray, and you said, ‘I am the only one, and there is no other.’

Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength.

Although he was crucified in weakness, he now lives by the power of God. We, too, are weak, just as Christ was, but when we deal with you we will be alive with him and will have God’s power.

And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,
