New Living Translation

I have seen wicked people buried with honor. Yet they were the very ones who frequented the Temple and are now praised in the same city where they committed their crimes! This, too, is meaningless.

Are they driven before the wind like straw? Are they carried away by the storm like chaff? Not at all!

I am ignored as if I were dead, as if I were a broken pot.

We have happy memories of the godly, but the name of a wicked person rots away.

We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now.

For the wise and the foolish both die. The wise will not be remembered any longer than the fool. In the days to come, both will be forgotten.

A poor, wise man knew how to save the town, and so it was rescued. But afterward no one thought to thank him.

The living at least know they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, nor are they remembered.

O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who turn away from you will be disgraced. They will be buried in the dust of the earth, for they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living water.

The lying witnesses said, “This man is always speaking against the holy Temple and against the law of Moses.

And my righteous ones will live by faith. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.”
