Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.

For the wise can see where they are going, but fools walk in the dark.” Yet I saw that the wise and the foolish share the same fate.

For the wise and the foolish both die. The wise will not be remembered any longer than the fool. In the days to come, both will be forgotten.

For people and animals share the same fate—both breathe and both must die. So people have no real advantage over the animals. How meaningless!

Both go to the same place—they came from dust and they return to dust.

He might live a thousand years twice over but still not find contentment. And since he must die like everyone else—well, what’s the use?

The same destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether righteous or wicked, good or bad, ceremonially clean or unclean, religious or irreligious. Good people receive the same treatment as sinners, and people who make promises to God are treated like people who don’t.

It seems so wrong that everyone under the sun suffers the same fate. Already twisted by evil, people choose their own mad course, for they have no hope. There is nothing ahead but death anyway.

The living at least know they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, nor are they remembered.

You said, ‘I will reign forever as queen of the world!’ You did not reflect on your actions or think about their consequences.

“And do not go to their feasts and parties. Do not eat and drink with them at all.

This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at what’s happening to you!

Listen to me and make up your minds to honor my name,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “or I will bring a terrible curse against you. I will curse even the blessings you receive. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you have not taken my warning to heart.

Who can count Jacob’s descendants, as numerous as dust? Who can count even a fourth of Israel’s people? Let me die like the righteous; let my life end like theirs.”

God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Oh, that they were wise and could understand this! Oh, that they might know their fate!

he added: “Take to heart all the words of warning I have given you today. Pass them on as a command to your children so they will obey every word of these instructions.

They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,
