Ecclesiastes 5:2

New Living Translation

Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.

Then Abraham spoke again. “Since I have begun, let me speak further to my Lord, even though I am but dust and ashes.

“Please don’t be angry, my Lord,” Abraham pleaded. “Let me speak—suppose only thirty righteous people are found?” And the Lord replied, “I will not destroy it if I find thirty.”

Finally, Abraham said, “Lord, please don’t be angry with me if I speak one more time. Suppose only ten are found there?” And the Lord replied, “Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”

Then Jacob made this vow: “If God will indeed be with me and protect me on this journey, and if he will provide me with food and clothing,

And this memorial pillar I have set up will become a place for worshiping God, and I will present to God a tenth of everything he gives me.”

Our God is in the heavens, and he does as he wishes.

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.

Don’t trap yourself by making a rash promise to God and only later counting the cost.

Wise words bring approval, but fools are destroyed by their own words.

Fools base their thoughts on foolish assumptions, so their conclusions will be wicked madness;

Too much activity gives you restless dreams; too many words make you a fool.

Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead.

For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

“Or suppose you make a foolish vow of any kind, whether its purpose is for good or for bad. When you realize its foolishness, you must admit your guilt.

“When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again.

Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.

He even vowed, “I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my kingdom!”

Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord. He said, “If you give me victory over the Ammonites,
