As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God.

But when he had become powerful, he also became proud, which led to his downfall. He sinned against the Lord his God by entering the sanctuary of the Lord’s Temple and personally burning incense on the incense altar.

“Shouldn’t someone answer this torrent of words? Is a person proved innocent just by a lot of talking?

“God is so great—higher than the heavens, higher than the farthest stars.

The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.

“Do not come any closer,” the Lord warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground.

“Make a bronze washbasin with a bronze stand. Place it between the Tabernacle and the altar, and fill it with water.

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.

The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but he delights in the prayers of the upright.

The sacrifice of an evil person is detestable, especially when it is offered with wrong motives.

But those who choose their own ways— delighting in their detestable sins— will not have their offerings accepted. When such people sacrifice a bull, it is no more acceptable than a human sacrifice. When they sacrifice a lamb, it’s as though they had sacrificed a dog! When they bring an offering of grain, they might as well offer the blood of a pig. When they burn frankincense, it’s as if they had blessed an idol.

Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord meant when he said, ‘I will display my holiness through those who come near me. I will display my glory before all the people.’” And Aaron was silent.

So I sent for you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here, waiting before God to hear the message the Lord has given you.”

And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

What? Don’t you have your own homes for eating and drinking? Or do you really want to disgrace God’s church and shame the poor? What am I supposed to say? Do you want me to praise you? Well, I certainly will not praise you for this!

Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins.

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did as he was told.
