The first one was very red at birth and covered with thick hair like a fur coat. So they named him Esau.

Then the other twin was born with his hand grasping Esau’s heel. So they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.

Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and married one of his daughters. He brought her to live in the City of David until he could finish building his palace and the Temple of the Lord and the wall around the city.

When these things had been done, the Jewish leaders came to me and said, “Many of the people of Israel, and even some of the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the land. They have taken up the detestable practices of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.

“Anyone who sacrifices to any god other than the Lord must be destroyed.

Treat them like native-born Israelites, and love them as you love yourself. Remember that you were once foreigners living in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

“Because of the violence you did to your close relatives in Israel, you will be filled with shame and destroyed forever.

So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.

“Do not detest the Edomites or the Egyptians, because the Edomites are your relatives and you lived as foreigners among the Egyptians.

“When you go to war against your enemies, be sure to stay away from anything that is impure.

Along the way they found an Egyptian man in a field and brought him to David. They gave him some bread to eat and water to drink.
